The Hazleton One Community Center hosted the first Luzerne County Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Youth and Law Enforcement Forum on Tuesday, March 7th. Young adults from a number of area high schools met with law enforcement officers from state, city and school police forces and began the process of opening a dialogue. At the end of the session both groups offered great feedback and spoke about developing a better understanding of the tensions and stresses each group experiences. We are already in the planning stages for additional events that can keep the dialogue going and foster even greater communication and trust between the groups.
The following pictures portray a series of role playing exercises where the young adults are tasked with acting like law enforcement while law enforcement was asked to react like young adults in a variety of scenarios.
On Thursday, March 2, the Keystone Job Corp. came to our center and read to some of our students from the After school Scholars Program! The beautiful stories from the Dr. Seuss books came to life with the Keystone Job Corp staffs storytelling. Thank You! Keystone Job Corp. for the time, backpacks, stickers, and hats that you all gave to our students here at the Hazleton One Community Center!
