The Afterschool Scholars Program enrolls students in grades K-6, with a special club program for middle school students in grades 7 & 8. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. From 3:30 until 4:00, all enrolled children are provided a hot meal in the cafeteria and spend time interacting informally with our teaching staff. During this time, children work with mentors who assist with a variety of free-choice activities including art, homework help, and team-building games. At 4:15, students are escorted to their assigned classrooms by their classroom teacher. Instruction time is from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Our formal program concludes at 5:15 p.m. Parent Pickup is from 5:15-5:30 p.m., during which time students have the opportunity to engage in free-choice activities.
We dedicate 45 minutes of classroom instruction each day to helping our scholars get a good start on their homework. Although we offer homework help, we do not guarantee that students will complete their homework during the program time. We ask that parents please check to see if your child’s homework is complete. Our enrichment curriculum is designed to reinforce school-based learning but through hands-on, inquiry-based activities and projects. To do this, our teachers work to create thematic units that last anywhere from two to five weeks. The units are grounded in age-appropriate academic content objectives and attend to the development of academic skills such as reading, writing, research, and more! Each unit includes a hands-on application of learning in the form of a creative project. Parents are invited to visit us at any time throughout the year, but we will also host two open houses, one in the fall and one in the spring, during which we will display our scholars’ completed projects. In addition to enrichment and homework help, students have access to the library, computer lab, and gymnasium at scheduled times.
Applications are now being accepte for the Fall 2017 Semester. If interested dont hesitate to contact the Hazleton One Community Center
